Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must satisfy the eligibility criteria outlined below for their respective roles.

Warden

A person may not be nominated unless he or she has consented verbally or in writing to the nominator or another person at the meeting.

A person nominated need not be present at the meeting.

A person making a nomination must be present at the meeting.

The nominated person must be:

  • baptised, and

  • (updated for 2026) a member of the Anglican Church of Australia in the Diocese, and

  • have usually, during 3 months in the preceding 12 months, attended services of public worship in the relevant* church of the parish, and

  • be at least 18 years of age, and

  • (new in 2026) have satisfactorily completed Safe Ministry Training within three years prior to the commencement of their potential election or appointment.

They must not be:

  • bankrupt or mentally incapacitated, or

  • engaged as an employee and who is paid from the funds of the parish or church, or

  • in Holy Orders licensed to the parish, or the spouse of a person in Holy Orders licensed to the parish, or

  • convicted of a disqualifying offence listed in Schedule 2 of the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012, or

  • (new in 2026) disqualified by the ACNC Commissioner during the preceding 12 months from being a responsible entity of a registered entity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012, or

  • (updated for 2026) a close family member of another warden of the church.

Parish Councillor

A person may not be nominated unless he or she has consented verbally or in writing to the nominator or another person at the meeting.

A person nominated need not be present at the meeting.

A person making a nomination must be present at the meeting.

The nominated person must be:

  • baptised, and

  • (updated for 2026) a member of the Anglican Church of Australia in the Diocese, and

  • have usually, during 3 months in the preceding 12 months, attended services of public worship in the relevant* church of the parish, and

  • be at least 18 years of age, and

  • (new in 2026) have satisfactorily completed Safe Ministry Training within three years prior to the commencement of their potential election or appointment.

They must not be:

  • bankrupt or mentally incapacitated, or

  • convicted of a disqualifying offence listed in Schedule 2 of the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012, or

  • (new in 2026) disqualified by the ACNC Commissioner during the preceding 12 months from being a responsible entity of a registered entity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012, or

  • holding the office of auditor of the financial statements and accounts of the wardens.

Synod Representative

A person may not be nominated unless he or she has consented verbally or in writing to the nominator or another person at the meeting.

A person nominated need not be present at the meeting.

A person making a nomination must be present at the meeting.

The nominated person must be:

  • a lay person (i.e., not a member of the clergy); and

  • at least 18 years of age; and

  • a communicant member of the Anglican Church of Australia (having been baptised and regularly participate in the Lord's Supper at an Anglican church).

They must not be:

  • insolvent under administration, or

  • mentally incapacitated.

Parish Nominator

[No elections in 2026]

A person may not be nominated unless he or she has consented verbally or in writing to the nominator or another person at the meeting.

A person nominated need not be present at the meeting.

A person making a nomination must be present at the meeting.

The nominated person must be:

  • a lay person (i.e., not a member of the clergy), and

  • a parishioner of the parish, and

  • at least 18 years of age, and

  • a communicant member of the Anglican Church of Australia (having been baptised and regularly participate in the Lord's Supper at an Anglican church).

They must not be:

  • employed to perform work in the parish or otherwise contracted as a staff member of the parish, or

  • an immediate family member of someone who is employed to perform work in the parish or otherwise contracted as a staff member of the parish, or

  • the spouse of a person in Holy Orders licensed to the parish, or

  • the spouse of a person who is a member of the Nomination Board, or

  • subject of a further disqualifying circumstances set out in paragraphs 32((2)(d)-(h) of the Nomination Ordinance 2006 related to persons: of unsound mind; disqualified from managing a corporation, disqualified from being a responsible entity of a registered entity; convicted of certain offences; or subject to a subsisting recommendation under Ministry Standards.
